Highscope is the curriculum we will be implementing at Smart Start Learning Center. Highscope is known for its “active participatory learning, adult-child interaction and their plan-do review process. Students who participate in programs such as Highscope go on to earn more money, commit fewer crimes, and more likely to be a positive contributing factor to society.

Children construct their own knowledge and they should be active learning, discovering things through individual experience. They should be allowed to explore things they are interested, because that is how they learn best. The most important aspect of this learning is the teacher is not there to dictate, but to be an observer and to work with the children to discover their own interests.
Plan: [10-15 minutes] Prior to starting their daily activities the children will be
separated into small groups with an adult and they will verbally share what they “plan” to do during their work time. They will share what they want to do, how they are going to do it and with who. After all of the children have shared it is now time to work.
DO: [45-60 minutes] This is time where the children get to carry out their plans.
During worktime the teacher is observing, taking anecdotal notes, asking though provoking questions but it is not the teacher’s job to dictate during this time. They children can work in any area in the class, even if it is not what they have planned.
REVIEW: [10-15 minutes] Another name for this is recall and the children get back
into the same groups they had for plan and they discuss what they did. This part is to ignite the metacognitive aspect of their brain. They are to tell what they did and if/why they changed the plan.
We will provide a nutritionally beneficial and balanced breakfast, lunch,
dinner and snack depending on the times they are present. All of these meals will be cooked in house with fresh ingredients. Every meal will be accompanied by a fruit and veggie. If your child has any allergies, please make sure you indicate that upon registration. Smart start will be a PEANUT FREE environment. A menu will be provided a month in advance, any edits made to the menu the parent will be informed at least 24 hours prior.
